Atlantis roars into the sky following lift-off Liftoff of Space Shuttle Atlantis!

With its main engines burning and solid rocket boosters roaring, space shuttle Atlantis blazes a trail through cloudless afternoon skies over NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, after an on-time liftoff at 2:01 p.m. EDT.

Atlantis and its crew of seven astronauts are beginning an 11-day mission to service NASA's Hubble Space Telescope one last time.

The Space Shuttle Program has retargeted the STS-125 launch for May 11 at 2:01:49 p.m. EDT. (04.29.2009)

Here are key times (all are EDT):

  • Launch: Monday May 11 at 2:01 p.m.
  • Hubble Grapple: Wednesday May 13 at 12:54 p.m.
  • Hubble Release: Tuesday May 19 at 8:53 a.m.
  • Kennedy Landing: Friday May 22 at 11:41 a.m. (Planned Mission Elapsed Time 10 Days, 21 Hours, 40 minutes)

NASA Sets Target Shuttle Launch Date for Hubble Servicing Mission (12.04.2008)
NASA announced Thursday that space shuttle Atlantis' STS-125 mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope is targeted to launch May 12, 2009.

Hubble Space Telescope Problem Delays STS-125 Launch (09.30.2008)
Due to the significant Hubble Space Telescope malfunction affecting the storage and transmittal of science data to Earth, NASA will evaluate the investigation results before fully determining the impact to launch of the STS-125 servicing mission, now moved into 2009.
