XRS-2 PhotosBuilding the insert →Measuring With the Faro Arm

The helium insert protrudes through the top of the aluminum stand, as well as hanging below. On the top, one engineer uses a futuristic-looking multi-jointed arm to measure it as the lead engineer looks on happily. (76K JPEG)

After everything is in place, we need to measure it precisely, so that the detectors (which are only a centimeter across) can ultimately be lined up precisely with the X-ray mirrors (which are 4.5 meters away from the detectors). The arm here is a precision measuring device to help us do just that.
